An evening of Cartier, collecting and conversation with Sotheby’s

Melbourne Sotheby’s International Realty welcomed guests to The Art of Time, an intimate viewing of a private Cartier collection led by Sotheby’s specialists.

The artistry and enduring influence of Cartier were the focus of The Art of Time, a private evening hosted by Melbourne Sotheby’s International Realty at its Prahran headquarters on Thursday 8 October.

Visiting Melbourne as part of an Australian tour, Sam Hines, Global Chairman, Watches at Sotheby’s, and Boris Cornelissen, Vice President and Head of Sale, Modern & Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s, joined invited guests for an intimate exploration of watches, art and the personal significance of collecting.

At the centre of the evening was a private collection of rare and significant vintage Cartier timepieces. Viewed at close quarters, the pieces offered an insight into the maison’s distinctive design language, revealing how proportion, craftsmanship and creative ambition have shaped its place in the history of watchmaking.

Hines guided guests through the collection, sharing the histories and provenance behind individual pieces. Cornelissen brought a complementary perspective from the world of modern and contemporary art, opening a wider conversation about connoisseurship, cultural significance and the relationships people develop with the objects they acquire.

The invitation-only gathering offered guests direct access to both specialists in a setting designed for thoughtful conversation. Over champagne, whisky and canapés, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, exchange perspectives and deepen their understanding of the collection and the wider Sotheby’s world.

For Melbourne Sotheby’s International Realty, the evening expressed a connection that extends beyond the sale of distinguished homes. An appreciation of architecture, provenance and craftsmanship sits at the heart of its approach, alongside an understanding that a home is often the setting for a lifetime of collecting.

The specialists’ Melbourne visit also included confidential private consultations providing opportunities for individual discussions about works of art, watches and collections.

The Art of Time brought these shared interests together: an evening in which international expertise met personal curiosity, and the stories behind treasured objects became the starting point for conversation.
