The Sotheby’s Connection: Art, Home and a Conversation with Lyn Williams

Melbourne Sotheby’s International Realty’s connection with Sotheby’s brings together property, art and the world of collecting.
This October, we welcomed Boris Cornelissen, Sotheby’s Vice President, Head of Sale, Modern & Contemporary Art, to Melbourne, offering clients a closer connection to the auction house’s specialist expertise.
These interests find a personal expression in a conversation with Lyn Williams, vendor of 60 Avoca Street, South Yarra. Lyn is the widow of celebrated Australian painter Fred Williams, whose works are held in museum collections across Australia and internationally. She reflects on a lifetime surrounded by art and the pleasure of finding something new in a familiar painting.
That sense of discovery extends to how she experiences Fred’s work in different settings. In a public gallery, a painting may reveal qualities that feel less apparent at home. Context, Lyn explains, influences what comes into focus: a good painting often has more than one thing to say, and a change of setting can bring another aspect to light.
At home, that relationship develops through daily encounters, as a painting becomes part of the rhythm of a room. Lyn’s reflections suggest how familiarity can deepen our appreciation while leaving room for discovery. The painting remains the same, yet what we notice and how we respond continue to evolve.
For Melbourne Sotheby’s International Realty, Lyn’s reflections give personal meaning to our connection with Sotheby’s and the world of collecting, offering a thoughtful perspective on how a artwork can shape a home, and how the home setting influences the way it is experienced.
